A hillside pool is not a standard pool placed on a slope.

A sloped property can change nearly every part of a swimming pool project: feasibility, structural support, excavation, access, drainage, retaining conditions, material handling, inspections, testing, and the order in which the work must be completed.

Some pools can be built using accepted standard structural details. Others require a geotechnical investigation, site-specific structural plans, drilled piers, additional reinforcing steel, special inspections, material testing, or other requirements established by the design professionals and building authority.

The order of construction matters.

Pier-supported and specially engineered pools contain inspection points that cannot simply be revisited after concrete is placed or reinforcing steel is concealed. Depths, bearing conditions, reinforcement, concrete, shotcrete, drainage, and structural connections must be coordinated in the proper order.

The right contractor must understand both the pool and the engineered foundation supporting it.

Complex Site Conditions

When a hillside pool requires more than standard construction.

No two properties are identical. The need for site-specific engineering, deep foundations, grading work, special inspection, or testing is determined by the property, soil conditions, proposed design, approved plans, and requirements of the local jurisdiction.

Slope, Soil & Structural Support

Steep grades, fill, weak or variable soils, expansive soil, landslide concerns, or uncertain bearing conditions may require geotechnical evaluation and a foundation designed specifically for the site.

Access, Excavation & Sequencing

Narrow side yards, elevation changes, drilling equipment, crane access, spoil removal, concrete delivery, and material staging need to be planned before construction begins.

Drainage & Retaining Conditions

The pool, decks, retaining walls, subdrainage, surface drainage, and existing hillside must function together. Water management cannot be treated as an afterthought on a sloped property.

Pier-Supported Gunite Pools

Drilled piers can transfer the pool load to suitable bearing material.

When required by the approved geotechnical recommendations and structural design, cast-in-place drilled piers may extend below unsuitable near-surface soil to support the pool at the depths and bearing conditions identified for that particular property.

  • Drilling-equipment access and safe working space on the slope
  • Pier diameter, depth, alignment, and termination requirements
  • Verification of bearing material or bedrock where specified

Pier depth is not guessed in the field.

The approved plans and geotechnical recommendations establish the criteria for each project. During drilling, the required inspector or geotechnical representative may document actual conditions, pier dimensions, depth, and bearing material before the foundation proceeds.

Conditions can vary across the same property. A qualified team must know when work can proceed, when an inspection is required, and when the engineer needs to be consulted.

The approved plans and actual field conditions control the final sequence, but pier-supported pools generally require close coordination across the following stages.

Feasibility & Initial Site Review

Review slope, access, preliminary pool location, drainage, existing improvements, and the likely need for surveying, geotechnical work, or project-specific engineering.

Survey & Geotechnical Investigation

Establish elevations and obtain subsurface information when required so the engineering team can evaluate soil, fill, groundwater, bearing conditions, and slope-related concerns.

Site-Specific Structural Design

The structural engineer develops plans and calculations for the pool shell, piers, reinforcement, connections, walls, and other structural elements required for the property.

Permits & Inspection Requirements

Building, planning, grading, and other approvals are coordinated as applicable, including required special inspections, testing, and engineer observations shown on the approved documents.

Site Preparation & Pier Layout

Access, protection, erosion control, layout, drilling setup, and working areas are prepared before deep-foundation work begins.

Pier Drilling & Verification

Each pier is drilled and documented in accordance with the plans. Required location, diameter, depth, alignment, and bearing conditions are verified before placement proceeds.

Steel Cages & Pre-Placement Inspection

Reinforcing cages are assembled, positioned, and inspected as required before pier concrete is placed. Concealed work must remain accessible until the required approvals are obtained.

Pier Concrete & Strength Testing

Concrete is placed using the approved mix and procedures. Test specimens may be prepared for early-age monitoring and 28-day compressive-strength evaluation when required.

Pool Excavation, Plumbing & Structural Steel

The pool excavation, plumbing, bonding, and reinforcing steel are completed and connected to the engineered foundation system in accordance with the approved details.

Gunite or Shotcrete & Project Completion

The structural shell is placed under the applicable inspection requirements, followed by curing, drainage, retaining work, hardscape, finishes, equipment, and final documentation.

Inspection & Testing Hold Points

Critical work must be documented before it is concealed.

The approved plans and jurisdiction determine the exact inspection program. Depending on the design, the following may be part of a hillside or pier-supported pool project.

Pier Excavation Records

Documentation of drilling, location, diameter, depth, alignment, bearing conditions, and concrete placement.

Reinforcement Inspection

Verification of steel size, spacing, cage assembly, clearances, laps, connections, and position before concrete.

Concrete Strength Tests

Concrete specimens may be tested at an early age, commonly seven days, and at 28 days for specified-strength evaluation.

Gunite or Shotcrete Inspection

Inspection or testing may address materials, reinforcement embedment, application, consolidation, and required samples.

Concrete-strength testing and soil-compaction testing are different procedures. Concrete cylinders or other approved specimens evaluate compressive strength. Compaction testing evaluates soil or engineered fill and is performed separately when required.

A complex hillside pool may involve several independent professionals. Each has a defined role, but the project only works when field conditions, inspections, testing, scheduling, and construction information stay coordinated.

Can a gunite pool be built on a hillside?

Yes. Gunite pools can be built on sloped and hillside properties when the design, foundation, drainage, grading, access, and construction sequence are appropriate for the site. Some projects can use conventional support, while others require site-specific engineering or deep foundations.

When does a swimming pool need drilled piers?

Drilled piers may be specified when near-surface soil is not suitable to support the proposed pool, when the structure must extend below fill or weak material, or when slope and loading conditions require a deep-foundation system. The geotechnical and structural engineers determine the project-specific requirements.

Who verifies the depth of the pool piers?

Verification depends on the approved plans and inspection program. A qualified special inspector, geotechnical representative, engineer, or other approved agency may document drilling operations, pier depth, diameter, location, alignment, and bearing conditions before concrete is placed.

Are the reinforcing-steel cages inspected before concrete?

When required, reinforcing cages and related structural steel must remain accessible for inspection before they are concealed by concrete. The inspector may verify bar size, spacing, clearances, laps, connections, cage configuration, and placement against the approved plans.

What are the 7-day and 28-day concrete tests?

Concrete specimens may be prepared during placement and tested for compressive strength. Early-age results, often at 7 days, help monitor strength development. Specified strength is ordinarily evaluated using the required 28-day results unless the construction documents state otherwise.

Is a concrete-strength test the same as a soil-compaction test?

No. Concrete-strength testing measures the compressive strength of concrete specimens. Soil-compaction testing evaluates the density and placement of soil or engineered fill. They are separate procedures performed for different reasons.

Do all hillside pools require site-specific engineering?

No. The need for site-specific engineering depends on slope, soils, fill, groundwater, retaining conditions, structural loads, pool configuration, local requirements, and professional recommendations. A hillside location alone does not determine the final foundation design.
